As the owner of a Black & Decker LST220 12-Inch 20-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless GrassHog Trimmer/Edger I was somewhat reluctant to try another trimmer. Quite honestly, I was happy with the Black & Decker. That is, until I got my hands on the Greenworks 21132A.What I found on the Greenworks trimmer were more options. I'm able to rotate the trimmer head to the best angle for me, turn the head and use its side-wheel to run as an Edger (way better than the metal wire on the B&D), and reposition the lower handle. The latter is the most important element to me. With the Black & Decker, the lower handle is set in place, making it a short grip for my long arms, whereas the Greenworks adjusts to fit me perfectly. Going green is big with me and an electric trimmer sounded like a great idea so I was excited about the purchase. I have been using it for several months now and over all it is not meeting my expectations. I have detailed below but because I have several serious issues with the trimmer I would not recommend it to a friend.Pros: Very powerful, will cut through anything from tall grass to full grown weeds that look like small shrubs. Balance is good. Has good features like the swiveling head for edging. Battery has good life. Long 4 yr warranty on the motor and components and 2 yrs on the battery. Phone support was very good. I have called 3 times and each time gotten someone quickly. I probably live in a hard environment for this unit, Texas is hot, we have St Augustine grass which is tough to edge and we have big yard. This string trimmer is equipped with a formidable 40 volt lithium-ion battery and consequently it performs better and lasts longer than most other battery operated trimmers. Although comparable in power to a gas operated trimmer, the Greenworks eliminates much of the noise and all of the noxious fumes associated with that method. The battery supposedly arrives discharged (although it appeared to be at least partially charged) and requires about 3 hours to fully charge as instructed. Greenworks also warns not to allow the battery to run down completely nor to overcharge it. The convenient LED battery indicator keeps you aware of its status so this shouldn't be difficult. We have yet to use the trimmer long enough in one session to discharge the battery, but according to the manual, it should last for 70 minutes between charges.
