Cordless is the way to go. However, given the current limitations of battery technology, I was concerned about finding a string trimmer that had the necessary balance of power, run time, weight, and charge time. I also wanted a reliable unit that would give me years of trouble-free service.
I did my usual due-diligence, and spent hours reading reviews and handling a few units at the local hardware stores. I work in the computer/electronics field, so I am very familiar with battery technology and the other parts of a string trimmer. I knew I wanted Lithium Ion batteries with >30 minutes run time. I was also more interested in the highest AH (Amp Hour) rating than Volts (e.g., 18V, 20V, 36V, etc). Marketing is pushing... It replaced a terrible corded trimmer that I had to take apart every few minutes to fix the string. The Greenworks with Lithium Ion battery works beautifully. The battery was still at fairly high capacity after about 45 minutes of trimming. Out of the box, the trimmer makes a good impression. It's solidly built. The instruction manual isn't very good (lots of repetition in the safety warnings and poorly written assembly instructions), but assembly and operation were easy to figure out anyway. I was concerned that the trimmer would feel heavy with the battery attached, but that wasn't a problem at all. Switching from trimming to edging is a snap. I love the automatic advancement of the string (especially after my old nightmare of a trimmer). The manual warns the user to keep an eye on the string after turning off to make sure that it hasn't receded... Easily done. During the first and only time I was able to use it, the weed trimmer began to smoke in less than 20 minutes of use. I let it cool off and tried again. It wouldn't run more than about 10 seconds so I gave up.
The manual says not to use the machine if it smokes. The manual has only a phone number to use to contact Greenworks. There is no mailing address, fax number or email address. I called the Greenworks number to talk about the warranty. After a 12 minute hold, I told a person about the problem. I was told that someone would call me within an hour for a "resolution." After two days without a call from Greenworks, I called again. This time I was on hold for 15 minutes when I gave up. I never heard from Greenworks after my first call. I then used the order confirmation email from Amazon to contact Amazon by email about the problem. That same day Amazon sent a new weed trimmer by...
